Renewal & Growth: The Journey Behind Young & Empowered Women (Y&E)

Veronica Aguilar, Founder - Young & Empowered Women; Vice President, Teach For America

In 2020, during the height of the pandemic, I founded Young & Empowered Women (Y&E), a nonprofit focused on mentoring and empowering young women in their careers. My passion for mentorship had always been central to my life, but it became even more vital during this challenging time as women reached out for advice on navigating professional struggles. I recognized the need to create a safe space where young women could connect, learn, and support each other. Thus, Y&E was born.

What began as a virtual meeting with 20 women has grown into a thriving nonprofit of over 250 members, including 60% first-generation college students and 65% women of color. Y&E’s mission is simple: close the gender gap and promote leadership without limits. Through mentorship, professional development, and networking, we strive to break down the barriers women face in the workplace. To date, 30% of our members have successfully negotiated their salaries for the first time, and many have shared stories of career growth and self-advocacy.

The most rewarding part of leading Y&E has been seeing the tangible impact it’s had on women’s careers and lives. From salary negotiations to finding the courage to be their authentic selves, it fills me with pride to see the growth and empowerment within our community. The work we’ve done has scaled statewide, culminating in an annual conference that brings together over 300 members.

As a woman entrepreneur and CEO, Y&E has profoundly shaped me, reinforcing my belief in the power of community and mentorship. Leading this organization has taught me resilience, self-advocacy, and the importance of creating spaces where women can thrive.

One quote that deeply resonates with me, especially in light of my experience with gender-based discrimination, is “She believed she could; so she did” by R.S. Grey. This phrase perfectly captures my journey of overcoming challenges, finding my voice, and advocating for change.
